Safety Alert!! Keep your Children Safe around Window Blinds!
Even the most attentive parents may take their eyes off of a child for only a few minutes to answer the phone, read the newspaper or a letter or even check the internet. Unfortunately, these quick distractions can sometimes lead to tragedy involving children and an everyday household items or accessory.
Window treatments, such as roller blinds or venetian blinds, are often culprits of such household incidents with young children. Playing with or near the cords of these accessories children can end up becoming entangled in the operating control chords of these blinds. On, there have even been occasions when children have caught up and strangled by these cords, resulting in serious injury or in the worst cases, death.
In the U.S. according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, at least 200 infants and children have from accidental strangulations between 1990 and 2001, prompting revisions to be made to roller blinds and other window treatments in order to create safer environments for the home.
It is advised that all households containing infants and young children use window coverings that were manufactured after 2001 in order to ensure that the safety upgrades are in place, such as cordless varieties. It could save your child’s life, just by having these installed in your home. There are also motorised options for most types of blinds available today.
The danger can also be reduced by keeping furniture, such as cribs, changing tables and chairs as well as toys away from windows to avoid accidental entanglement with cords from blinds, draperies and other window dressings. Try to create an inviting play area in the centre of the room and never leave your child unattended when corded window treatments are being used. Best practice is to try and keep them well away from window areas, because “what they don’t know about can’t hurt them.
If corded window treatments are being used, always be sure that the cords are in their locked position and keep hanging cords out of reach. This can be done by simply tucking the dangling cord tucked in between the higher rung blinds or using the techniques recommended by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in this Brochure .
Please keep your children safe and please be aware of everything around you.
